A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
