Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
