EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
